Can You Part With An Old Prom Dress?
A group of local philanthropists are asking the community if they can dig into their hearts and their closets to donate a spare prom dress for some displaced students from Far Rockaway finishing out the school year at other area high schools.
The drive is the brainchild of Kristin Stelfox, a Stony Brook resident who thought of the idea after reading about a similar drive in the aftermath of a devastating tornado that touched down in Joplin, Mo. in May of 2011.
"When you have those kinds of tragedies you're thinking about immediate needs," Stelfox said. "Food, water, basic clothes. But by the time the end of the school year came around, people didn't have prom dresses. I figured, why can't that be replicated here, where we have similar circumstances."
Stelfox's goal was to gather as many prom dresses as possible for those students forced out of their home in the wake of Hurricane Sandy: students whose lives have been turned upside down and may not have the financial circumstances to go out and shop for what is arguably the biggest night in a teenager's life. She teamed up with Amanda Dulaney, a New York City social studies teacher in Brooklyn, and a 2007 graduate of Sachem High School East.
Dulaney said the idea was perfect for her building considering so many of her students have been givers themselves.
"I have students that are underprivileged," Dulaney said. "My kids are inner city, and they've actually donated to the Red Cross, they've done blood drives, they've done coat drives. Plus our building got kids from the Rockaways who were displaced. My kids have been very generous and this is a surprise for them. We haven't told them yet."
"Amanda's kids have been looking for ways to help these new students, and she was in the process of finding a private charity that would donate dresses," Stelfox explained in an email blast. "She wasn't having any luck and when I approached her with this idea she was 100% on board."
Majority of the dresses will go to Dulaney's school, but depending on the outpour of donated dresses, the plan will be to distribute them to other affected schools. So far Stelfox has gathered more than 20 dresses, about halfway to their initial goal of 50. Dulaney said she was especially thrilled to see that some of the donated dresses were plus size, and is encouraging donations of all shapes and sizes.
"Plus, it's a starting point," Stelfox added. "These dresses can be modified, updated, bows can be taken off or the dress can be altered to fit your personal taste."
Dresses should be gently used, but they will also accept dresses purchased from Goodwill or other thrift stores. All dresses will be collected by April 1. Dulaney plans to surprise her students with them just before the height of prom season fever.
So, if you have a spare prom dress and would like to donate it to this cause, you can ship or personally deliver the dresses to 15 Botany Lane, Stony Brook, NY 11790, care of: Kristin Stelfox and Sue Sugar. Click on the gallery photo for the official drive flyer, and for contact information.

Berklee band entertains a disappointed Romney crowd
What do you play for a room full of people who’ve just lost a
presidential election? “Like Hall & Oates and Stevie Wonder,”
explains Eytan Nicholson, the leader of Sweet Tooth and
the Sugarbabies, the band of current and former Berklee College of
Music students who performed at Mitt Romney’s election
festivities at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center Tuesday
night. “No matter what’s going on, it’s happy music that everybody knows
and likes.” Nicholson explained to us on Wednesday that his band got
the election-night gig because they’ve played for the former governor
twice before. They played a wedding years ago, and the best man wound up
being one of Romney’s top campaign staffers. “They needed a band that
could kind of put some life into Super Tuesday originally. We showed up
and mermaid bridal dresses got some people dancing and had some fun.” Nicholson said it’s a
unique challenge to play an election night party that could turn into a
massive celebration — or a night of mourning. Once it was clear that
Romney had lost the race, they keep the music upbeat, but within reason.
“Later in the evening we had to stay away from songs that had certain
connotations. Like ‘Celebration’ or ‘Tonight’s Gonna Be a Good Night.’
. . . They didn’t want it to be awkward. They still wanted
entertainment.”
For the record, Nicholson says the Sugarbabies are not a political band. He had nice things to say about both candidates, and said he would have been honored to play for either of them. “I didn’t vote at all,” Nicholson said of his own politics (or lack thereof). “I’m literally not political.” Nicholson said he expects there to be more celebratory dancing at the band’s next big gigs. Sweet Tooth and the Sugarbabies play the Newbury Street and Faneuil Hall tree lighting ceremonies on Nov. 13 and 17.

After Katrina, will Salman guide sister’s career?
He’s known as the man with the Midas touch, miraculously altering the fate of any actor from doom to superstardom.
From his “ex-lover” Katrina Kaif to little-known South Indian star Asin, Salman Khan has been instrumental in taking newcomers under his wing and transforming them into big stars.
And, now with Katrina’s kid sister Isabelle gearing up for the spotlight, opposite veteran Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan for a crossover project, we are certain that Salman is gearing to play godfather.
Considering he did it for her big sister, he’d do it again for Isabelle.
When Katrina and Salman had parted ways, industry insiders had speculated that Katrina would step in as producer and use her Bollywood clout to help her sister.
There were even talks of a big budgeted movie directed by Ayan Mukerjee, but now that she has reconnected with Salman post ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, it does appear that he will play a crucial role in Isabelle’s Bollywood career.
With the movie industry not favourable to newcomers, Katrina will surely ensure that Isabelle gets the “Khan” backing that she had once enjoyed.
Initially there were reports of Isabelle kick-starting her career by being a part of the Indian reality show ‘Big Boss4’, but that never materialized with industry insiders claiming Salman was reluctant to put her through the grueling test.
Apart from an international degree in acting, Isabelle has also had her share of ill-fortune in B-town, with an MMS scandal surrounding her. It was, however, cleared after big sister stepped in to prove the video was fabricated.
Controversy isn’t new to the Kaif household, with Katrina’s debut in the raunchy ‘Boom’ being rebuked by critics and the audience. She was even shunted to do obscure South Indian movies.
It was only until Salman stepped into her life, and movies with David Dhawan’s ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’ in 2005, that Katrina started making giant leaps in her career.
From then on, she has made the right movie choices with back-to-back box-office hits, pitching her in the top league today. “Had it not been for Salman Khan, she would not have made it in Bollywood,” reveals a source.
“It’s evident that the tag of being Salman Khan's girlfriend helped her in bagging films of top directors.”
Although his influence is evident, Salman has never taken credit for it. “Katrina is what she is because of her hard work and I don’t feel I have contributed to her success,” he had told the Indian media.
From dictating what inexpensive maternity wedding guest dresses to wear, to what movies to sign, Salman still controls her movie choices. “I don’t want her to start doing heroine-oriented roles just yet. No point doing it just for the sake of it,” he insists, during a media interview.
“She is making the right choices now. She can take on heroine-oriented roles later in her career, when the roles have some meaning,” he adds.
Looking at how Salman has converted Katrina into an overnight success, it’s evident that Isabelle will only stand to benefit from this legendary ‘Khan’ connection.

'You tortured and raped me from when I was four': Beauty Queen's shocking message to her father posted on her style video blog
A pageant queen and self-ascribed
'beauty guru' has sent shock waves through the internet by posting a
startling video in which she addresses her rapist father and threatens him with three guns.
Brie Lybrand put up a twelve minute piece in which she explains that her abusive father has recently subscribed to her channel and tells him 'now is the time' for her to speak out about his crimes.
Calling the post, a 'different kind of video' than normal, the Lousiana native launches into a harrowing attack on a Steven Bressler, the father she says sexually abused her from the age of four to 13.
Scroll down for video
Ms Lybrand, whose normally upbeat videos are watched by over 2,000 viewers and contain tips on beauty brands and shopping advice, appears in the video without even a hint of the makeup so immaculately applied in previous posts, looking tired and vulnerable.
'My zombie eyes are in full affect,' she half-quips mustering the effort to laugh at herself through tears before explaining the motive behind her post.
'I just got an email from You Tube
saying the man that raped me for most of my life subscribed to me. The
man that took my virginity, robbed me of innocence, has subscribed to me
on You Tube and is watching my videos.'
'I never got to testify in court and tell him what it feels like being tied up and chained and tortured for hours when you're four years old by your father,' she continues.
According to the statement, her father not only forced himself on her but tried to kill her mother, Ron Lybrand, 'many times'.
One account recalls a night on which he beat 'the teeth out of' her for trying to protect her daughter.
'I watched my mother in a pool of her own blood and then he came after me,' she says. 'Even at my age I still have nightmares that he's coming back to kill me.'
Though Ms Lybrand tells her viewers that she got away from him at 13, how she managed to do this is unclear as she still lives in the city in which she grew up.
A
lifelong resident of New Orleans, Ms Lybrand's own website exclaims
proudly: 'I was born and raised in the "Crescent City" also known as
"The Big Easy," New Orleans and am proud to call it home!'
Remaining in New Orleans for college, the bit-part actress attended Tulane University in the city where she graduated with a degree in Theatre and History and though now she spends a significant amount of time sharing her secrets on You Tube, according to her latest post she also teaches children.
'You wanna see what kind of person I
turned out to be?' She challenges her father before the video cuts to a
new shot and she lists her achievements as cheer-leading captain at high
school and college graduate.
Her choice to become an actor is one, she explains, chillingly, that she credits to him.
'I think I became an actor because I had to escape my reality. The reality of the tortures of what you did. I got really good at it. I got really good at pretending I was somewhere else. Steven Bressler, when you were raping me my mind was somewhere else.
'I was in Disney World, or I was on a beach. Or on a swing listening to Broadway musicals. But I was anywhere except you on top of me. And I have turned that into my career.'
Switching the subject, Ms Lybrand then goes on to ask how he managed to get someone to marry him and calls his new wife by her name.
How she knows this information is unclear but she refers to a lady named Suz and then claims her real name is Glenda.
Perhaps
the most shocking act in the beauty queen's story is at five minutes
when she introduces her father to a substantial arsenal of weapons.
Ms Lybrand shows viewers three handguns, one by one and tells her father she is always prepared for him.
'Let me show you my friends,' she says before drawing an automatic pistol from a baby pink carry case. She then shows a smaller version that she carries in her purse. And finally a third, pink gun that proves is loaded by opening the barrel.
'Even though I will be forever damaged because of you, you haven't gotten the best of me... I met a wonderful man who understands, who is there when I have to cry and when I have to be upset on father's day when I didn't have a father. I had a monster. I had a murderer.'
The man she talks about is Nick Rohde who appears in a couple of wedding photographs on her Facebook page and yet who she refers to later in the video as her fiance.
'I wish for your death every
day,' she begins to conclude. 'You don't deserve to breathe the same air
that I breathe. When you die, I will find your grave and I'm going to
take a big, heaping dump on it because that's what you deserve.'
The actress then suppresses a smile and wipes her face before continuing.
'I hope you see my face every day for the rest of your miserable life,' she says before urging him to unsubscribe from her channel. 'In the end you're going to be punished and I can't wait. Until then, stay out of my way.'
Gawker has pointed to opinions that the story may have been made given Ms Lybrand's penchant for acting but others have argued that she has too much of web presence to fabricate something so serious.

'Big fat' wedding of Andhra Pradesh Minister's daughter: Who footed the bill?
Vizianagaram: As Andhra Pradesh transport minister, every vehicle
should be at his beck and call. That was probably the presumption of
Andhra Pradesh PCC president and state transport minister Botsa
Satyanarayana Rao when he hosted his daughter's wedding celebrations in
Vizianagaram district on Wednesday. An estimated 300 SUVs from three
districts was allegedly used to ferry guests around Vizianagaram,
Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. Who footed the bill is the big question?
Private taxi operators are reluctant to go on record with who called for the vehicles and who is paying. Several operators say they had to cancel pre-existing booking to accommodate the demands. District officials requesting anonymity say it is not unusual for VIPs to ask for vehicles to be sent and since it is not official, there is no one to pick up the tab.
Former Energy secretary and senior IAS officer EAS Sarma has written to everyone from Congress president Sonia Gandhi to state chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy to Governor ESL Narasimhan asking who is footing the bill for the arrangements being made for transport and hosting of so many VVIPs. Mr Sarma says it is nothing but a farce that so many ministers and others chose to conduct review meetings in the district precisely on the same date, in an attempt to give a private visit the garb of an official one. Many ministers were travelling with their family members.
Even governors from Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, K Rosaiah and HR
Bhardwaj, and leaders from Delhi, including Ghulam Nabi Azad, attended
the wedding. So did virtually the entire Andhra Pradesh council of
ministers and those newly inducted into the Union council of ministers
from Andhra Pradesh.
It was as though not just the entire district machinery of Vizianagaram and also adjoining Visakhapatnam and Srikakulam had been drafted for wedding duty. Policemen were deployed in huge numbers.
Officials say the visit of so many VIPs calls for not just protocol and deployment of official machinery but also raises security issues. This falls on the Andhra-Orissa border where there is Maoist threat as wellgrape satin shoes.
There has been no response from Botsa Satyanarayana or the state government. Congress leader PC Chacko said in Delhi yesterday that if official machinery was misused, the Congress was not for it.
Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee chief Botsa Satyanarayana is considered a very influential leader in these parts with influence over several sectors. He and his family are being investigated for links in the liquor mafia scam.

WEEKEND: Mexican dinner to benefit Mujeres de Maiz foundation
SEQUIM — The seventh year has been especially
fruitful for the Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation, a nonprofit
group connecting Sequim with the Mayan women of Mexico.
And in the spirit of El DÃa de los Muertos, that quintessentially Mexican celebration, Mujeres is inviting Sequim and the surrounding community to a party this Saturday night.
There will, of course, be abundant food: a vegetarian Mexican dinner cooked by Molly Rivard and her fellow Mujeres de Maiz supporters at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.
The evening's festivities, to start at 5:30 p.m., will include a special compilation of Mexican background music, a short video from the Mayan communities of Chiapas state and auction bidding on gifts from near and far.
“If you're going to the [Port Angeles] Symphony” at 7:30 p.m. at the Port Angeles High School auditorium, Mujeres co-founder Judith Pasco noted, “you can still come and have dinner” and make it to the concert on time.
Tickets will be available only at the door for a suggested donation of $20, with proceeds going toward Mujeres' programs for girls and young women in Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost and poorest state.
“We've got such gorgeous stuff at the auction. Every year, I think it can't get any better, and then it does,” said Pasco.
Unique holiday gifts
The event is a holiday shopper's heaven, she said, adding that the dozens of items come from around North America.
There are weavings, clothing, Christmas ornaments and ceramics from southern Mexico.
And, Pasco marveled, two new snowboards have been donated by Mervin Manufacturing in Carlsborg.
Pasco and the Mujeres de Maiz board of directors gathered these gifts for the yearly El DÃa de los Muertos dinner, which is also a time when Mujeres' mission is explained.
Pasco and her small group of Washingtonians named their organization in honor of the Mexican women Pasco had gotten to know during her travels in rural Chiapas.
Women of the corn
The women, who speak both Spanish and the indigenous Mayan language, call themselves Mujeres de Maiz en Resistencia — women of corn, in resistance.
The words evoke their lives.
Corn is the staple food of Mexico; the women seek to strengthen their local communities. And they resist the oppression, personal and political, that plagues their country.
In 2006, the Mujeres de Maiz Opportunity Foundation set out to raise money for one scholarship for Yolanda Hernandez Gomez, then a teenager who hoped to study English in college.
And through the annual El DÃa de los Muertos dinner and many other fundraisers, the foundation has raised more than Pasco ever dreamed.
Nineteen girls and young women are now attending secondary school and college thanks to Mujeres scholarships.
Mujeres recently received a top rating from GreatNonprofits (www.Greatnonprofits.org) and is included, for the fourth consecutive year, in the Alternative Gifts International catalog (www.AlternativeGifts.org).
Mujeres also provides support for Saturday enrichment programs for elementary school-age children in rural Chiapas. And last August, 16 girls and women received much-needed eyeglasses thanks to Mujeres.
Gomez, who's known as Yoli, is about to graduate from college in San Cristóbal, Chiapas, this winter.
She'll give a short testimonial in the video to be shown after the Mujeres' dinner Saturday evening — in English, the subject in which she will soon have her degree.
Yoli hopes to return to her home town of Zinacantán to teach English, Pasco said.
Yoli's older sister, Juana, also was awarded a scholarship from Mujeres and is finishing a degree in computer science.
She's already teaching computer classes to children in her home village.
The Mujeres foundation seeks to support women and girls as they pursue any level of education, Pasco added.
And as they expand their skills with computers, English and business management, she said, the women return to their own communities to share that knowledge.
Where to find more
Mujeres publishes a newsletter, maintains a website and offers presentations on its work to local organizations. Pasco and the foundation can be reached via www.MujeresdeMaizOF.org, by emailing mujeres@olypen.com or by phoning 360-683-8979.
But the best way to learn about Mujeres and the women of Chiapas, Pasco said, is to come enjoy the Mexican food, music and handicrafts Saturday.
There will be tortilla soup with guacamole, salsa, cheese and chips; salad with lime and cilantro dressing and the pièce de résistance, homemade Mexican wedding cookies.
Pasco's gratitude to those who participate in the event, be they cooks, auction donors or dinner guests, has grown steadily over the years.
“My favorite thing about the dinner is being able to greet and talk to our supporters,” she added, “and thank them in person.”

Fresh Meat series 2 episode 4 review
Rewind three days earlier and the crew are heading down to JP's palatial residence for a weekend of unbridled hedonism. All except Howard who is locked in a battle of wills with BT technical support, and Heathsley. The hybrid creature formerly known as Heather and Kingsley. But by some quirk of fate they separate and Kingsley goes off to join the gang and more importantly Josie.
After the fizzing dialogue of last week, there's a markedly subdued tone here. JP walking around his childhood home when he finds out his mother's selling it has some very bittersweet moments. Though these sit awkwardly with his many dickish moments as well. Similarly, there's FINALLY an attempt at making Josie something approaching sympathetic. Her slightly unhinged sociopath front slips as she talks about her ex Dave's upcoming wedding. But then it's quickly restored when she blames that break up on Kingsley. Conveniently forgetting that ON HER FIRST DAY in the house she got naked with JP on a whim. Then she goads Kingsley into driving her all the way to Wales in Oregon's car to crash the wedding before realising that her old relationship wasn't really that. Maybe all this self-centeredness is meant to make Josie look cutely immature but it only makes me scream at Kingsley to run far, far away.
Speaking of the pussyman, Kingsley seems to have reverted back to his straight man role which is uncomfortably similar to The Inbetweeners' Simon. Joe Thomas plays a great straight man but it was a treat to see him spread out a bit with Kingsley's pseudo-hippy persona in previous episodes. So Kingsley reverting to a doormat again feels like a massive step backwards. Oregon's thread in this episode is another misstep. Following on from her rivalry with Derek ending up with his mag being shut down and she becomes the centre of a Twitter storm. It plays out to no consequence and seems like it's there to serve as filler. Incidentally, this has the shortest episode running time yet this series.
Yet for all of its structural faults, I found myself really enjoying this week's instalment. There's some great dialogue between the freshers, and one reference to a Robin Williams film had me belly laughing. There's some nice character moments when JP and Josie reminisce about their past lives. JP talking about the time he went to the Millennium Dome and Josie about the small town wedding she and Dave had planned that's going ahead without her. It does lose a bit of steam towards the end when its revealed JP is burning his childhood possessions, apropos of nothing.
Again the mix of comedy and drama is an uneasy one. Both exist in Fresh Meat outside of one another. Tellingly, there's two writers behind this one and I wonder if they ever talked to each other. In isolation the drama and comedy scenes work well, but together they make this episode fractured. But as I said, I found myself really enjoying it this week. It's good to see Fresh Meat fleshing out JP and Josie beyond their hateful exteriors, even if it has to metaphorically dig up JP's dead dad. And it would take a stone heart not to melt a little at Vod throwing evidence of an affair onto the fire near the end.

Orsett Hall Wedding Fayre continues to shine
THERE ARE wedding fayres and there are wedding fayres. Sixteen other
hotels and organisations had wedding fayres on the same day as Orsett
Hall. But the car park was packed and so was the adjoining field!
There was an array of stalls that lined the suites and halls. Flowers, dresses, hats, singers: even a chimney sweep.
YT spoke to wedding manager, Michelle Williams about the services Orsett Hall provides.

Kim Kardashian Plans Expensive Wedding - Will Get Pregnant Later with Kanye West's Baby?
Is Kim Kardashian busy with another wedding, while planning to get pregnant after marrying Kanye West?
A new report claims the beautiful reality TV star is reportedly planning a lavish $20 million wedding with Kanye and a baby will follow.
The reality TV star - who has been dating the rapper for eight months and recently returned from a romantic trip to Rome and Venice to celebrate her birthday - is said to be planning to walk down the aisle in a $8.5 million wedding dress as soon as her divorce from basketball player Kris Humphries is made official.
A source told OK! Magazine Kim is already contacting possible wedding planners.
The source said: ''Kim is thinking of using David Tutera, who has [worked with] everyone from Jennifer Lopez to Jewel to Barbara Walters.''
The 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians' star is also said to be eager for either their close friend Beyonce or Celine Dion to sing at their special day.
The source said: ''Kim's all-time favourite singer is Celine Dion, and she has had her people reach out to her for a price; usually a private performance runs well over $6 million.
''Another option they're strongly considering is Beyonce, who will be there anyway.
''Kim's dream dress would have real pearls and white diamonds, like the [gown] designed by Yumi Katsura, which cost $8.5 million.''
Kim previously said her next wedding would be very different to her multi-million nuptials with estranged husband Kris.
She said: ''It had always been my dream to have a big wedding, and when people said I'd made it over the top for the show, that was just me: I am over the top. But the next time, I want to do it on an island with just my friends and family and that's it.''

Crowley wedding ceremony unites local couple
Crowley wedding ceremony unites local couple
Heidi Lynn Romero of Crowley and Jason Hunter Meaux of Rayne were joined together as man and wife during a 4 p.m. double ring ceremony on Saturday, September 8, 2012. The Reverend Jimmy Broussard officiated the nuptials at First Presbyterian Church in Crowley.
The bride is the daughter of Stephanie Gotte Romero of Crowley and the late Wilfred James Romero, Jr. She is the granddaughter of Jimmy and Marie Gotte of Crowley, Josephine and Charles Hoffpauir of Crowley and Wilfred, Sr., and Shirley Romero of Rayne.
The groom is the son of Ferdie Meaux of Rayne and Ramona Champagne of Houston, Texas. He is the grandson of Wanda and Teddy Bertrand of Crowley, Delmar Neil of New Mexico, and Theogene and Sable Meaux of Rayne.
Heidi and Jason both graduated high school from Northside Christian School in Crowley in 2009. Heidi is currently employed as an operations specialist at Stokes & Spiehler in Lafayette. Jason is the owner of Forever Farms, LLC, through which he works as a thoroughbred horse trainer at Copper Crowne Equestrian Training Facility in Opelousas.
Arriving guests were ushered to their seats by Ricky Sonnier, godfather of the bride, and Timmie Bruce, cousin of the groom.
Musical selections for the ceremony were provided by Michelle Harris.
Escorted to the altar by her brothers, Wilfred “Trey” Romero, III and Dylan Romero, the bride selected a richly textured Galina Signature gown of soft white lace over charmeuse embellished with all-over beaded soutache floral detailing. The gown’s strapless sweetheart bodice and fit and flare silhouette combined for a sleek and sophisticated look. The back of the dress featured buttons three-quarters of the way down and flowed into a chapel train.
For her headpiece, the bride selected a mini blusher veil featuring a curly feather and flower detail with a pave crystal center.
Heidi’s handheld bouquet was a combination of white orchids, calla lilies and roses. She carried the spirit of her father by entwining his Grey Wolf Oilfield ring among the flowers. Also entwined was a rosary bracelet made of ruby stones, her father’s birthstone.
Her father’s ring was also used to ensure good luck in the couple’s marriage, representing both “something old” and “something borrowed.” Other traditional items were her wedding dress as “something new,” and her wedding shoes, which served as “something blue.”
The bride’s sister, Heather Romero was maid of honor. Laticia Meaux, sister of the groom, was her bridesmaid.
Bridal attendants wore sleeveless, knee-length dresses of Malibu blue satin. The V-neck bodices ended in ruching-defined natural waistlines. Each carried a handheld bouquet of ivory antique roses.
Flower girl was Aleigha LeBlanc, niece of the groom. She was escorted by the groom’s nephew, Greyson Martin.
The groom’s cousin, Caleb Bruce, was best man. Cody Bruce, also the groom’s cousin, stood as groomsmen.
Ring bearer was Schoen DesOrmeaux, the bride’s nephew and godson.
For her daughter’s wedding, the mother of the bride, the former Stephanie Gotte, selected an Adrianna Papell, floor-length gown in iridescent charcoal gray chiffon. The surplice bodice featured a pin-tucked empire waistline, from which the skirt’s interlaced scalloped tiers flowed. Layered flutter sleeves perfectly echoed the skirt’s cascading tiers.

Pastels, Pajamas and Pop on Milan's Runways
Pastels, Pajamas and Pop on Milan's Runways
It is looking like a mod, mod spring.
From palazzo pajamas to wacky sunglasses, Milan fashion week offered up enough newness that shoppers may have to scramble to keep their wardrobes current come spring.
The new attitude is zany pop. Look no further than Moschino's high-waisted minidresses, worn with big round sunglasses, to get that late-sixties vibe. Or lounge in a floaty caftan from Etro or Gucci.
After several seasons of focus on pointy-toed stiletto heels and a pinched wasp waist, stylish women can breathe as well as stride again. There are new tailored shapes—easy, loose-around-the-waist tailoring that is forgiving and feminine, without looking like a man-tailored suit with frills sewed on. The newest shoes have a chunky square heel and round toe—or are flat.
There is even a new color palette in the air. Pastels are inching their way into fashion after several fluorescent years. Tangy orange and sizzling yellow from previous seasons gave way to sea-foam green and powder pink. This is revolutionary: Pastels have been death to fashion sales for years.
But when Miuccia Prada gives a nod to something heretofore considered ugly, you know it is the new black. In one of the week's most talked-about collections, Prada showed pale pink dresses whose baby-girl softness was hardened by a twist: cartoonish daisy embroideries with blood-red stems.
Paris's fashion week is just gearing up. When the season's collections conclude on Oct. 4, we'll know more about the shape of the season to come. But one thing is clear already: Designers' optimism reflects a cheerier outlook from wealthy consumers.
Milan's luxe shopping district around the Via Della Spiga and its Rinascente department store were bustling with shoppers laden with purchases. It felt like Christmas—augmented by rare sunny weather in the often-gray city.
American retailers welcomed the new shapes in the spring 2013 collections. "When you change the silhouette, you have to buy something," said Stephanie Solomon, fashion director of Bloomingdale's, at the Ferragamo show. "New everything." She said she has directed the stores' buyers to focus on the new "pop" look of fashion.
Some retailers are trying new things as they cater to fashion hungry consumers. Moda Operandi CEO Aslaug Magnusdottir said her site—which sells runway looks by pre-order like an online trunk show—will launch regular season clothing sales in November. There will even be vans in New York for same-day delivery.
Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce renovated their former D&G store on the Corso Venezia, turning it into what might become a prototype Dolce & Gabbana department store, with everything from women's and men's clothing to cosmetics and christening clothes for babies. It also had a new, country-house look, with antique wardrobes and repurposed wood parquet floors.
As we go forward into the final stretch of the spring 2013 collections, here are some of the clear choices for style consumers. But not every look is made to last, so we offer an investment rating as a guide to spring fashions.

Free Wedding Dress From A Bride Who Wants To 'Pay It Forward'
Free Wedding Dress From A Bride Who Wants To 'Pay It Forward'
The wedding dress is a big part of every wedding. But after the Big Day, it may be doomed to a life inside of a box, waiting for a future daughter to wear it down the aisle. Or worse, never to be worn again.
But one Washington, D.C. woman decided her dress was too beautiful to condemn to a life in hiding. So she's giving it away.
HuffPost Weddings spoke to the generous bride -- who wishes to remain anonymous -- and she told us that, after tying the knot two weeks ago, she felt so surrounded with love that she decided the best way to repay her family and friends for such a "hospitable, generous, and warm" wedding was to pay it forward to another bride.
The woman is looking for a bride who is unable to afford a wedding, a groom looking to surprise his bride with a dress they wouldn't have been able to afford, or a couple who had to elope or have a courthouse wedding and is now looking to have a more formal affair. "Basically, I'm hoping to find someone who really loves the dress and whose wedding experience will be truly transformed by having it," she told Huffington Post Weddings in an email.
The dress, which originally cost $800, was purchased from the family-owned Cocoon Silk in Portland, Ore. via Etsy. The shop uses Cambodian silk to create all of their own designs, and even did some alterations for free. The dress roughly fits a size 4.
"To know that this dress will bring someone else joy on their special celebration is an incredible blessing. It makes my own wedding feel that much more special, to know that we were able to use it for some greater good," she said of her decision to give away the dress.

Rose Parade 'love float' to feature live wedding, sponsor says
Farmers Insurance announced Monday that its entry in the 2013 Rose Parade — fittingly dubbed "The Love Float" — will feature a live wedding, the first in the iconic parade's 124-year history. The 2013 theme is "Oh, the Places You'll Go!"
Michael L. Linton, the enterprise chief of marketing officer for Farmers, said the company was "looking to do something unique" for its 2013 float, which will be the 54th Farmers has entered in the annual parade.
"We thought, 'Boy, we ought to do something real fun and more interesting,' " Linton said. " 'Why don't we host a live wedding?' "
The happy couple will be selected through a nationwide contest, Linton said. The company will accept online submissions until Oct. 14, after which a panel of judges will choose up to four finalists who will be put to a public vote.
"In the era of the Internet, social media allows us to reach out across the entire country and let anybody who wants to participate to participate," Linton said.
Wedding costs are also included in the winnings. Farmers will provide flights to the bridge and groom and six guests, along with a wedding dress and tuxedo, rings, hair and makeup, and marriage license fees.

Couple has fly-by Colorado wedding to include Fort Collins mother with terminal cancer
Couple has fly-by Colorado wedding to include Fort Collins mother with terminal cancer
Most brides plan their wedding over a span of months, crafting every detail with precision and care — down to the last flower petal.
But for Jaqueline Diaz-Sua, 23, of Florida, the perfect wedding required no pomp and circumstance — only the people she loves and the blessing of her 63-year-old mother-in-law, Geri Kidawski.
Diaz-Sua and her fiance, Chris Kidawski, 34, began planning the makeshift ceremony three days before saying “I do,” flying to Colorado on Friday night to give the family one more memory together before the end of Geri’s two-year battle with cancer. She’s expected to die in coming weeks.
“That’s what weddings are all about — to have the people around you who you love there to witness your love,” Diaz-Sua said minutes before walking down a makeshift aisle in the garden of Turnberry Place Assisted Living, where Geri moved 10 days ago.
“That’s the most important thing in this world.”
The couple, who got engaged July 22 of this year, originally had planned a larger February ceremony in Diaz-Sua’s Florida home. When it became apparent that Geri likely wouldn’t survive long enough to be there, the young bride and her mother began drafting a plan to include her “second mom” in their special day — a gift to her husband-to-be and the woman who raised him.
The February ceremony will feature a slide show from their fly-by wedding in Colorado, she said. Sunday’s ceremony was as “perfect” as any wedding could be.
She donned “something new” — a princess-like white dress purchased from David’s Bridal the night before. Her hair was swept into a simple, romantic side ponytail by a local stylist at Arabella Salon.
She slipped “something blue” — graceful royal blue sandals — on her feet.
“Something borrowed” came in the multiple donations from the Fort Collins community — a donated cake from Baby Cakes bakery, donated photography services from Natalie Beck Photography, donated decorations from Fort Collins Nursery and a donated arch and chairs from Front Range Event Rental — that put the finishing touches on what started out as a small, private ceremony.

Miss Tate and Mr. Lefler exchange vows at Second Baptist Church of Conway
Miss Mallory Rea Tate and Mr. Chance Douglas Lefler, both of Conway, were united in marriage at 5 p.m. on June 2, 2012, in a double-ring ceremony at Second Baptist Church of Conway, officiated by Pastor Paul Hudson of Conway.
The bride is the daughter of Bill and Belinda Tate of Conway. She is the granddaughter of Mrs. Betty Hamilton and the late Mr. Dewey Hamilton of Conway, and Mr. and Mrs. Willis Tate and the late Mrs. Noble Faye Tate of Harrison, Ark.
The groom is the son of Lance and Lynn Lefler of Conway. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. David Chance of Conway, and Mrs. Virgie Lefler and the late Doug Lefler of Stuttgart, Ark.
The outside of Second Baptist Church was decorated with pink ribbon. The entrance was lined with green ferns and large lanterns filled with pink rose petals and candles. The foyer entry table was decorated with black iron candlesticks and a picture of the couple. Pink rose petals were spilled out over the table. Programs were also on the table held in a black basket. The altar of the church was adorned with large candelabras and were flanked by Tuscan columns. Inside the columns were spiral votive candles. On the top of the columns were large floral arrangements of pink gladiolus, roses, mums and peonies. Green ferns were placed around the church.
The guests were seated to the couple’s favorite church hymns played by organist, Milton Bull, cousin of the groom. While the organist played “Jesu Joy of Mans Desiring,” the groom escorted his mother to her seat, followed by the mother of the bride escorted by Zackery Hill. A saxophone solo of “The Wedding Song” was played by Greg Montgomery. Bible scripture 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 was read by Pastor Stan Young. The bridesmaids began the processional to “Canon in D.” “The Bridal Chorus” announced the bride and her father.

Sporty? It's the Olympics, Stupid!
Sporty? It's the Olympics, Stupid!
LONDON — Shorts, pantsuits, elongated polo shirts caressing the calves and masses of mesh — why would funky London fashion suddenly take up sporty dressing?
It’s the Olympics, stupid!
This year has been a game changer in British attitudes toward sports, leaving behind the typical ironic and laconic talk about being “good losers” and instead rejoicing in gold medal glory.
So it is with fashion. While New York designers appear to be moving away from their American sportswear roots, the London summer 2013 collections are embracing dynamic dressing.
The looping ruffle at theJ.W. Anderson collection, inserted on a curve in a short, sporty dress, suggested a new take on androgyny. So did the flare of fabric around the hips of soft trousers. That was reinforced by sleek boyish hair and sports sneakers or boots.
The designer Jonathan Anderson, who came to women’s wear via men’s, and also has a collaboration with Topshop, played with sexual ambiguity. He called his show “The Treatment Room,” suggesting some film noir horrors. (A black bandeau wrapped one bosom on a flower-scattered patterned pantsuit.) But the words applied to the complex treatment of fabrics and surface textures, what the designer called “three-dimensional surfaces, modern craft and the glorification of fabrics.”
So there was a spongy quilted neoprene jacket (and bag) with a tiny, graphic print dress; and mannish Prince of Wales check tailoring. The show had an intriguing, offbeat feeling.
The Day-Glo lace outfits that closed Simone Rocha ’s summer 2013 show caught perfectly her mix of the innocent and the subversive. The designer, who seems to take a big stride forward each season, said she was inspired by Ed Templeton photographs of youngsters kissing. Hence, the sweet naughtiness of clothes that hinted at school uniforms in prim colors — but they had windows on the body with inserts of mesh, lace or crochet.
For Mulberry , fashion is still in the bags — big, bold, colorful, imaginative and practical. It is not that they steal the show. (That place is reserved for the dressy poodles mincing down the runway in pooch peacoats and collars.) Yet however hard the brand’s creative director Emma Hill works on spring styles, like bold, sculptured coats or the summer cape in pliable leather that opened the show, the bag is the thing.
They are given names: “Alexa” after the It girl Alexa Chung, or “Del Rey” for the singer Lana Del Rey, who sat front row next to Kate Moss.
The clothes were strong and sporty with bold biker jackets, fluid pleated dresses and even a floral-patterned jumpsuit. (Cue for identical fabric as a bag.) This matchy-matchy treatment of the collection denigrated its impact, but that is mainly because the bags are so powerful.

Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds' wedding put together by Martha Stewart
Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds' wedding put together by Martha Stewart
If you want the scoop on Blake Lively’s wedding to Ryan Reynolds, it’s not Gossip Girl who’s got the dirt. And don’t bother looking for secrets from one of the sisters of the “Traveling Pants” (though Us Weekly would like you to know all of those actresses attended, FYI).
Martha Stewart, it turns out, is the one with the full story — because her team planned the Sept. 9 affair.
We don’t mean that Lively’s been saving clips from Martha Stewart Weddings since her training-bra days (though who knows, maybe she has). The magazine team personally styled the event, and as such, they have exclusive coverage of the whole thing. But since that story (and accompanying lifestyle-porn photo spread) won’t be out until December, the mag has thrown a few scraps to appease your curiosity.
Among the questions answered:
1) What was Blake Lively wearing?
Despite reports that the 25-year-old actress chose a Chanel gown — she was the spokesmodel for Chanel Mademoiselle handbags, after all — Lively wore Marchesa instead. Her friends Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig work for the brand, and as per a statement from Marchesa, it was “a hand-draped silk tulle bodice adorned with custom crystal and rose gold embroidery.” As for the bridesmaids, they were also in Marchesa, “custom-made blush silk chiffon gowns with crystal embroidered detail.”

The Right Pair Of Gold Earrings For Your Sweetie
Karats describe how pure the gold within a pair of earrings is; the higher the percentage of gold in the earrings, the larger the karat. The following are the most common Karat ratings you will encounter when shopping:24K = Pure Gold18K = 75% Gold (18 parts gold and 6 parts other metal)14K = 58.3% Gold (14 parts gold and 10 parts other metal)12K = 50% Gold (12 parts gold and 12 parts other metal)10K = 41.7% Gold (10 parts gold and 14 parts other metal)In the course of your shopping you will come across 14K gold frequently. 14K gold earrings tend to be the most popular because they contain more than 50% gold and are usually reasonably priced; not as expensive as 24K gold earrings and yet not cheap enough to be 10K earrings.
If you want to stay on your girl's good side you want to be sure and avoid 10K.While 24K gold earrings are nice and your girlfriend or wife will appreciate them, they are also not very practical. Because 24K is pure gold it is quite soft and susceptible to damage, not the sort of practical jewelry accessory for daily wear. It is best to decide on a pair of gold earrings that contain some amount of another metal, so that the earrings are durable, and the price stays low.Gold can be made into different colors, which means you will have to decide on one when shopping. By adding other metals to gold when creating the earrings metallurgists can create white gold, or by adding copper or silver can create a rosy pink or greenish color to the earrings, respectively.
You will have to know what your special someone likes when it comes time to make this decision.Your final decision should be based on how often the earrings are going to be worn. If you are purchasing the earrings for a special occasion and splurging big by buying 18K or 24K earrings, then it is most likely that the earrings will only be worn occasionally. But if your loved one is looking for something she can wear frequently then your best bet is 14K.Gold filled or gold plated earrings look just as nice as the authentic ones, and are a great choice if the love of your life is not very particular. However, be careful if she is allergic to metals. If she intends to wear the earrings regularly, there is a chance that the thin layer of gold on the earrings can rub off and leave her vulnerable to the metal underneath.

She specializes in necklace sets which consist of matching earrings and occasionally a bracelet
We made the decision that she required to include a "signature look' to her styles to provide them character and turn them into some thing specific that purchasers would possess a difficult time passing up.After circling the store for awhile and discussing many different options, we made the decision the fact that add-on of the beautiful handmade lampwork bead or two to each and every layout was just what was required to provide her diamond jewelry a signature look. Yes, she would phone call for to improve her marketing price factors a touch contemplating that handmade lampwork beads could possibly be expensive, but I felt optimistic that she could get these increased costs using a great offer more distinctive designs. Our frustrated diamond jewelry customized went home and produced 15 new necklaces utilizing one or two strategically positioned lampwork beads in each and every design. The gorgeous colours using the lampwork beads produced the sleep of her layout pop, getting them from instead normal to very extraordinary. Her marketing price factors experienced been raised to compensate to the elevated expense.
We possess a bead store customer who is very a skillful diamond jewelry maker. She specializes in necklace sets which consist of matching earrings and occasionally a bracelet. She utilizes best level of quality resources and her work is very great constructed. She keeps her costs at an extremely sensible level without any underselling herself.Well this very great handmade diamond jewelry customized arrived into our store using a distraught appears on her face. She was visibly upset, even in tears. She tearfully claimed the fact that diamond jewelry she worked so difficult on wasn't marketing at exhibits or by means of the consignment outlets in which she consigns.
